Strange and Veldhuis ask the questions no one has ever asked before
Invasive aquatic plants are finding their way to the Netherlands with increasing ease. The same is true for mosquito species. This can endanger public health, for instance through mosquito-borne disease, and biodiversity. Ecologists Emily Strange and Michiel Veldhuis are researching whether there is a link between the increase in invasive floating aquatic plants and mosquitoes. With support from LUF, the researchers hope to implement their programme on an international scale.

Once a year the LUF Committee for Academic Expenditure (CWB) awards grants for scientific pro-jects of Leiden University researchers. The grants vary in principle from € 5,000 to € 25,000.

LISF committee investigates gender bias
The LUF International Study Fund (LISF) will make changes to its allocation process following an investigation into diversity in its grants policy. This investigation, which was carried out for the LISF by, among others, former committee member Mariska Kret and master’s student Marjolijn Wijnen, has shown that female students who submit an application are slightly less likely to be awarded an LISF grant than men.

The semester spent in Leiden by... Cara from South Africa
Law student Cara van der Westhuizen from South Africa (University of Pretoria) received good news this year: she could study in Leiden for a semester with the aid of the Mandela Scholarship Fund. This fund is supported by LUF student members. Cara started at Leiden Law School at the beginning of September. We spoke to her about her adventure at Leiden University.

Camino Laurent van Vugt Fund wishes art history researchers an exciting path in life
Following his own path from a young age, taking on challenges, asking for advice and inspiring others with the insights he’d gained: that was Laurent van Vugt’s (1939-2019) path in life. In his will he left a bequest to LUF, which his wife established as a named fund: the Camino Laurent van Vugt Fund.

Rombouts Fund makes purchase extraordinary Chinese manuscript possible
Leiden University Libraries (UBL) has been able to acquire an extraordinary Chinese manuscript at auction in Hong Kong. It concerns an Imperial Edict (dated 1582) from the Ming dynasty period, at one time part of the former collection of well-known sinologist and author of detective-novels Robert van Gulik. The purchase was made possible thanks to a contribution from the Rombouts Fund for Chinese Special Collections, a named fund at LUF, and support from the UBL Friends Foundation.
